Since May 2022, as an Optical Design and Simulation Engineering Consultant at NILT, Rafael has driven revolutionary advancements in optical design methodologies. He is instrumental in the setup, development, testing, and maintenance of cutting-edge electromagnetics and nanophotonics numerical simulation tools, including Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis (RCWA), Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD), Finite Difference Frequency Domain (FDFD), Finite Element Method (FEM), and Beam Propagation Method (BPM). His responsibilities encompass numerical simulations, optimization iterations, and tolerance analysis of optical nanostructures, utilising high-performance computing. Rafael’s innovative approaches, particularly his novel design methods and machine learning models for the inverse design of diffractive and metasurface optical elements, have generated significant value, saving NILT several hundred thousand euros. He proficiently performs data analysis of simulations and measurements, fitting mathematical models with experimental data and troubleshooting complex issues.
Key projects include generalising the Jacobi-Anger expansion within FDTD simulations for the characterisation and inverse design of large-scale diffractive lenses applied to VCSELs, with results rigorously verified against experimental measurements. He has also significantly contributed to collaborations with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) on collimated beam shaping using non-imaging metasurfaces, presenting his work at a prestigious SPIE Photonics conference. His technical understanding and abilities are notably comparable to the best in the field, surpassing many PhD-level researchers.
